Why is St George’s Day not a bank holiday?

St George’s Day in England is celebrated on April 23rd yet is not included as a public or bank holiday for those living in England.

There is a call for the government to make St. George’s Day a bank holiday in England. Not only does England fall way behind other countries for the number of public & bank holidays but Scotland (St. Andrew’s Day is a voluntary public holiday) & Ireland (St. Patrick’s Day) get to celebrate their Patron Saints days with a day off.

The government has no plans on changing the bank holidays we receive in England but with Ireland having had St Patrick’s Day on 17th March as a public holiday since 1903, Scotland having just had St. Andrew’s day on 30th November put as a voluntary public holiday and the Welsh Assembly agreeing that St. David’s day should be a public holiday for Wales on 1st March then the momentum is there to make St. George’s Day also a public holiday for England.
